The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to provide more funding to Bay Area public transportation systems. The drafted budget listed a $2 billion cut to public transportation funding and no operations funding for struggling transit agencies. Before it was passed, Preston hosted a rally on the steps of City Hall, which drew in transit advocates and leaders from BART, Muni and Caltrain, among others. San Francisco will pay police officers highest entry-level salary in Bay Area "We can't afford to lose public transit. Hundreds of thousands of people rely on Muni every single day to get to their jobs, to school, to the grocery store, and to the senior center," said Jeff Tumlin, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency director of transportation. La “interseccionalidad” se volvió un tema candente en los últimos años. Esto es lo que significa

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:18:57 GMT

(CNN) — Interseccionalidad. Feminismo interseccional.

Are Brazilians Hispanic? Many say ‘yes,’ report says

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:18:57 GMT

A coding error in an annual survey by the U.S. Census Bureau has offered unprecedented insight into how large numbers of Brazilians in the U.S. identify as Hispanic. An analysis by Pew Research Center shows that the coding mistake revealed at least 416,000 Brazilians, or more than two-thirds of Brazilians in the U.S., identifying as Hispanic in the 2020 American Community Survey. By comparison, only 14,000 Brazilians identified that way in 2019, and only 16,000 Brazilians did so in 2021 — years when the coding error wasn’t made.Since 2000, the Census Bureau hasn’t classified Brazilians and other people from non-Spanish speaking countries in Latin America and the Caribbean as Hispanic because of federal government definitions that were last revised in 1997 but are being reconsidered for an update next year. Because of this, if someone marks that they are Hispanic but Brazilian on the survey, they are recoded as “not Hispanic” when the numbers are crunched. In 2020, however,...

Ukraine agitates to keep EU bid on Europe’s mind

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:18:57 GMT

Ukraine may still be dominating the news cycle in Europe. But in Kyiv, there are jitters that its bid to join the EU is slipping off the front page. An informal update on the process from Brussels widely expected in April is more likely to arrive in late May, according to EU and Ukrainian officials. It’s poor timing for Kyiv, which is now also quarreling with some of its closest EU allies over a glut of Ukrainian grain shipments that depressed local prices and left farmers fuming. The incidents are crystallizing a difficult reality for Kyiv: Joining the EU was always going to be hard. It will take time for Brussels to sort through the logistics. It will be difficult to maintain political support during the bureaucratic lulls. And countries will be increasingly anxious about the economic turbulence that may result from integrating more than 40 million Ukrainians and their major industries into the EU. On the logistics front, EU officials close to the membership process...
