A recent article from the Associated Press reminded us that PointsBet has an exclusive agreement with the University of Colorado, suggesting that students are targets who want to bet.“I struggle with any kind of predatory marketing, whether it’s cigarettes or alcohol,” said B. David Ridpath, a professor of sports administration at Ohio University. “You can make the same argument with gambling.”Online sports betting has put casinos in the pockets of millions of Americans, exacerbating the risk of gambling addiction and threatening a flood of bankruptcies and suicides.Experts blame the rapid growth on the fact that over 46 states have already passed laws that allow sports gambling to flourish, ...

Colorado mountain snowpack beating 30-year norm as spring nears — except for Arkansas River Basin

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:06:05 GMT

Colorado mountain snowpack measured above normal in early March, a few weeks before the closely watched seasonal peak, except in the Arkansas River Basin, where lagging snow could lead to low water flows. The snowpack tracked by federal snow surveyors appeared relatively promising with the latest data showing the overall statewide level at 120% of the norm, which is based on a 30-year average between 1991 and 2020. In particular, watersheds that feed the heavily-tapped Colorado River held above-average snow, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service snow survey data.“We still have a little bit more of winter to go, and then we will have the early spring and early summer precipitation that could still give us a boost. If we do get a good spring, things could get better,” snow survey supervisor Brian Domonkos said.“But things could go the other way, too.”Snow on Colorado’s mountains typically peaks between March...

Ready for the Big One? Homeowners in these Bay Area cities can apply for money to prepare for earthquakes

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:06:05 GMT

The Big One is coming. And thousands of homes across the Bay Area aren’t ready for it.If your house is among those that aren’t yet earthquake-safe, you may qualify for a new state program to help pay for seismic retrofits. Starting in late April, homeowners in Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco can apply for grants to reinforce single-family homes with a vulnerable “soft story” on the ground floor. The most common example is an older house with a garage below the main living area, said Janiele Maffei, chief mitigation officer for the California Earthquake Authority, the agency overseeing the program.“You’ve taken out all the elements that resist earthquake forces — and that’s the walls,” she said. Many soft-story houses can be reinforced with steel or wood, but homeowners often balk at the hefty price tag — which can range from $14,000 to $27,000, Maffei said. The new pilot program, using $5 million in federal funding, is se...

49ers free agency: Time to pay up for a tight end to complement Kittle

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:06:05 GMT

When it comes to splurging on a tight end, the 49ers wisely did so with George Kittle in 2020.When it comes to free agency, they consistently avoid such spending.Perhaps that changes this shopping season.Adding a No. 2 tight end is an annual chore that seemingly fails to deliver, all due respect to Ross Dwelley’s sure hands and Charlie Woerner’s special teams value.Tyler Kroft’s one-year, $1.2 million deal last May was the largest given to a free agent tight end since Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch took command in 2017. Other one-year duds since then: Logan Paulsen (2017), Levine Toilolo (2018), and Jordan Reed (2020).Next month’s draft supposedly offers a deep pool of tight ends, which could tempt the 49ers to burn their free agent dollars elsewhere. Here is how that marketplace looks:WHO’S HEREKittleKittle had a career-high 11 touchdown catches in his sixth season, after missing the opening two games with a groin injury. He made his fourth Pro Bowl and drew All-Pro Second-Team honor...
