NOAA issues El Niño watch: Here's where and when we will feel the impact

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 16:35:44 GMT

(NEXSTAR) – Move aside La Niña – it's almost time for El Niño to take over.National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center issued an "El Niño watch" Thursday morning, saying the climate pattern is expected to form sooner than previously anticipated. After La Niña ended last month, we entered "ENSO-neutral" conditions, which means neither La Niña nor El Niño is present. Those neutral conditions were expected to end at some point in the summer or early fall. But as of Thursday, it looks as though the timeline has moved up. Forecasters said there is a 62% chance El Niño will take over between May and July. The probability that El Niño will form by fall is even higher, between 80% and 90%. La Niña is officially over, NOAA announces: What does that mean? What would that mean for our weather? We usually feel the strongest effects of El Niño as we get closer to winter. An El Niño fall and winter would be the inverse of what we’ve seen the last ...

Juror: Texas governor's rush to pardon Daniel Perry a 'travesty'

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 16:35:44 GMT

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — An alternate juror in the trial of a U.S. Army sergeant convicted of murder said Wednesday that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's rush for a pardon is an “egregious overreach” to wipe aside the jury's unanimous decision over a 2020 shooting during a Black Lives Matter protest. TIMELINE: The latest with the Daniel Perry case In an interview with The Associated Press, Jere Dowell said prosecutors put on a convincing case against Daniel Perry, who was in his car working as a ride-share driver when he shot 28-year-old Garrett Foster, who had been legally carrying an AK-47 while marching with demonstrators through downtown Austin. As an alternate, Dowell did not have a vote in convicting Perry but said she was in the room for deliberations and she agreed with the verdict handed down Friday. “I just think it’s a travesty,” Dowell said of Abbott already seeking a pardon. Abbott calls for pardon of Daniel Perry after guilty murder verdict Her comments are the first time a j...

St. Paul looks to add more duplexes, triplexes and other ‘missing middle’ housing

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 16:35:44 GMT

St. Paul’s heavily single-family neighborhoods could soon be a thing of the past.An effort to rewrite the city’s zoning codes to allow denser housing like duplexes in all of the city’s residential districts is gaining steam at City Hall with the support of many housing advocates and to the chagrin of some of the city’s traditionalists.More than half of St. Paul’s housing stock is composed of single-family homes, and more than a third is nestled inside sizable apartment buildings. City planners see a “missing middle” — ample opportunity to install more duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes, as well as townhomes, mother-in-law apartments and small cottage-style houses clustered around a courtyard. In fact, 72% of the city’s residentially-zoned land only allows detached, single-family houses, a major impediment to housing growth at a time when the Twin Cities are believed to be short 80,000 units to meet housing demand.
