Eberflus hopes to see more big passing plays in Bears’ final 2 games The Chicago Bears have a star receiver in DJ Moore, another potential deep threat in Darnell Mooney and an improved offensive line.Despite all that, they’re 28th in the NFL in passing after beating the Arizona Cardinals 27-16 on Sunday. Coach Matt Eberflus would like to see more big passing plays.“We just got to just continue to work on that,” Eberflus said Tuesday. “It’s got to, to your point, get the downfield, explosive throws. How you score in the NFL is to get explosive passes and explosive runs. That’s what you need to do.”The Bears are averaging 182.6 yards passing. And with two games remaining, they don’t have much time left to work on it.The Bears came into the season hoping Justin Fields would take a big step forward as a passer. But that hasn’t happened.Against Arizona, Fields had a 53-yard completion to tight end Cole Kmet. But his overall passing numbers were modest: 15 of 27 for 170 yards, after throwing for 166 yards the previous week. He also ran fo...

Panthers No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young beginning to show poise, moxie as rookie season winds down CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers are beginning to see some of the poise and moxie they were hoping for this season out of No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young. The rookie quarterback turned in his best game of the season on Christmas Eve, completing 23 of 36 passes for a career-high 312 yards and two touchdowns against the Green Bay Packers. Although the Panthers lost 33-30 when they weren’t able to spike the ball at the Green Bay 31 before time expired, it was still a game where Young took a significant step forward. He had not thrown for more than 250 yards in a game.Young seemed to get more comfortable in the pocket as the game progressed, throwing two TD passes to DJ Chark in the fourth quarter to erase a 14-point deficit. He threw the ball precisely and without hesitation. a sign of growing confidence. It was the second straight game Young showed some good stuff with the game on the line.Against Atlanta, Young led the Panthers on a 90-yard drive over the final 7:35 to set up...

Ice storms and blizzards pummel the central US a day after Christmas MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — From an ice storm in North Dakota that sealed windows shut to blizzard conditions in Colorado causing hundreds of airport delays and cancellations, a winter storm pummeled much of the central United States on Tuesday, the day after Christmas. “The heavy snow conditions in the Plains should be slowly alleviating today, but it’ll be very slow,” said Weather Prediction Center forecaster David Roth. “Even when the snow ends, the high winds should keep visibility near zero — whiteout conditions — for a decent part of today.” Laura Schmidt-Dockter, a resident of Bismarck, North Dakota, wore ice spikes on her shoes as she walked outside to the trash can. Her driveway was sheer ice, she said. A neighbor took to the street on ice skates. “It’s actually not bad!” the neighbor quipped about the quality of the ice, skating by Schmidt-Dockter in a video she posted to social media. At Denver International Airport there were over 530 flight delays and 23 cancellations as of...
